PatternExpression consists of two main components, that are both highly mosaic and are seen from early larval to adult stages. One component consists of two pairs of neurons in the dorso-rectal ganglion, between one and four pairs of neurons either side of the pharynx, and a single neuron in the mid-body region of the worm. As staining of these neurons is purely nuclear, i.e. no processes are visible, the exact identity of these neurons is not known. The second component consists of staining of intestinal nuclei, particularly of posterior intestinal cells. In addition, occasionally a variable number of nuclei stain in embryos (both pre- and post-comma stage), possibly in neuronal precursors.
