fert-1 is a single-copy gene in Ascaris lumbricoides var. suum which is eliminated in all somatic cells during the process of chromatin diminution. At least eight different transcripts are detectable in a 3-day-old embryo, of which four are polyadenylated. The transcribed region of fert-1 contains two trans-splicing sites of which the second one is used for cis-splicing as well. The longest open reading frame would encode a putative protein of 137 aa which shows no homologies to any known protein sequences.
